Imagine working at the forefront of innovation in fluid-flow technology, with over 1,400 colleagues across the globe, and contributing to a legacy of excellence that spans eight manufacturing facilities on four continents. Armstrong Fluid Technology is more than just a leader in our industry; we are a community of the brightest and most creative minds, driven by a shared mission to engineer the future and safeguard our planet.
As part of our Armstrong team, you'll be immersed in an environment that fosters growth, creativity, and collaboration. Here, you'll have the opportunity to push boundaries, tackle exciting challenges, and develop cutting-edge solutions that promote energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Every day offers the chance to make a meaningful contribution to a more sustainable future, driving innovations that help lower global carbon footprints. Together, we’re creating a legacy that goes beyond business - one that’s changing the world for the better.
As a Senior Designer on our global design team, you will set the standard for design craft. The role owns the templates, design system and precision artwork that make Armstrong's technical products look and read consistently across regions, including product labels and packaging, brochure and collateral templates, product and schematic visuals, and the assets that support trade shows and customer events.
This is a role of scope, not just output. The Senior Designer works independently, decides how an open problem should be approached, briefs and manages external vendors, and codifies what works into standards others reuse. The person in it is expected to understand why good design works, to keep studying the craft, and to explain their reasoning.
Key Accountabilities:
- Scalable global template and precision design system
- Create and maintain the library of templates and design assets for global use: brochures, ads, product label templates, PowerPoint master decks and new collateral types.
- Own the structure and rules of the design system in Figma and the Armstrong Visual Asset Management System, including asset upload, version control and naming, so teams in every region can reuse work without asking.
- Test new design tools and workflows, decide which are adopted, and lead the team's adoption of them. This includes AI image tools, with documented prompts and a clear check on accuracy before anything is published.
- Write down the how-to for each template (instructions, approvals, handoffs) so the system does not live in one person's head.
- Record the reasoning behind each standard, not only the steps: why this grid, type scale or colour rule, so others can extend the system without breaking its intent.
- Precision artwork delivered
- Produce production-ready artwork for regulated and technical products: nameplates, packaging, warning, retrofit and control-guide labels, with required content, dimensions and approved colours.
- Proof artwork with vendors and engineers before print or production, and guide engineering on improvements that meet brand and industry standards.
- Create product renderings, schematics and isometric illustrations that turn technical product information into clear visuals.
- Take whitepapers, infographic reports and case studies from raw technical material to branded, customer-facing content.
- Collaboration and support
- Design major events and brand environments: booths, screens and video for trade shows, customer visit experiences and facility or office branding.
- Partner with engineering, product, sales and regional marketing, translating requests into scoped design work and flagging risk early.
- Brief, evaluate and manage external design partners and suppliers.
- Plan weekly capacity against the tracker, and record both planned and unplanned work honestly so the team's load is visible.
- Leadership
- Coach designers through design reviews, clear standards and direct feedback; delegate appropriate work across the team to build capability and consistency.
- Run design reviews and take the lead in prioritizing work within the Senior Designer's workstreams.
- Raise the group's craft literacy: lead a short regular session for Toronto and India designers on a craft topic (typography, grids, information design) using real Armstrong work and outside references, and take part in the group's proactive design practice.
Qualifications and Requirements
- 6+ years of professional design experience, with a portfolio that demonstrates ownership of design systems or templates, not just individual pieces.
- Expert in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, and fluent in Figma; working knowledge of a digital asset management tool (Frontify or similar) and PowerPoint master-slide design.
- Knowledge of and hands-on experience with Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro is a strong asset.
- Strong print production knowledge, including bleed and trim, dielines, colour proofing, and working with vendors to proof production artwork.
- Ability to create product and schematic illustrations, including the responsible use of AI image tools with documented prompts and verified results.
- Ability to set the standard for design craft: explain why a design choice works, turn standards into reusable systems, and support design decisions with strong theoretical grounding.
- Commitment to studying the craft, with the ability to discuss the designers, books or ideas that have shaped their work and show how those influences appear in what they create.
- Ability to explain the reasoning behind a design decision clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally, to an engineer or customer as readily as to another designer.
- Comfortable with ambiguity, competing priorities and unplanned requests that arise mid-week.
- Clear communicator who can work with engineers, vendors and regional teams, and who enjoys teaching others.
- Toronto-based, with the ability to work on site in Scarborough.
Why this role matters
Good design makes complex products easier to understand, trust and choose. The Senior Designer ensures Armstrong presents its products with clarity and consistency wherever customers and partners encounter them. Just as importantly, this role creates the standards and tools that allow strong design to be repeated across teams, regions and channels - not recreated from scratch each time.
